Greetings all,
This is the official announcement for our new
campaign. More information will be posted in a series of related posts
over the next several weeks. Here's some important information about
the new campaign.
Title:We are tentatively going with the title "Beyond Mythralis: Shades of Ruin". Thanks to everyone who discussed this on the forums.
So What is Beyond Mythralis: Shades of Ruin?Shades
of Ruin is the next campaign to follow Beyond the Veil. In the Shades
of Ruin campaign, the PCs will be leaving the continent of Mythralis to
go to another continent. The specific in-game reason will be discussed
in the Beyond the Veil epilogue. This series will be six events, after
which the surviving PCs (if any) are expected to return to Mythralis
for our as-yet unnamed third campaign.
Theme:The
main themes of this campaign are exploration and discovery. This is
intended to be a dark, heroic campaign where the PCs will have the
chance to make world altering decisions - but many choices have a cost.
Inspiration:
We are going for a darker, grittier setting. We'll be seeing more
ordinary people as NPCs, who might view magic with suspicion. We'll
also be seeing more laws and restrictions on the darker forms of magic,
and potential punishments for people who get caught. In terms of
atmosphere, the inspirations for this specific campaign are Timeline by
Michael Chrichton, The Black Company series by Glen Cook, the Song of
Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin, and The First Law series by Joe
Abercrombie.
This specific campaign has also been highly
influenced by a Dungeons and Dragons campaign run by Larry and Elys
Noel. Thanks to the Noels for their inspiration!
Closed World:Once
this campaign begins, all games set in this game world - on the
continent of Mythralis and otherwise - will be permanently closed to
inter-campaign travel. There will be no movement between characters to
or from other game settings after this campaign begins unless Plot
decides to make an exception for a special combined event. Do not
expect these exceptions to ever occur.
We are making this change for a number of reasons:
-To allow for more continuity between games and therefore a more cohesive storyline
-To prevent players from feeling obligated to attend other LARPs to remain competitive in this one
-To
allow for major plot developments in this game world that could
drastically affect characters without having to worry about the
consequences on other games. For example, we may have a several year
time skip between events, or a character might receive permanent
bonuses and penalties based on a curse, character race, etc.
-To
allow for a logical, self-contained economic system with a wide variety
of types of coinage for different lands, bartering prices for goods,
etc.
-To use a different game system that is more appropriate for a high-powered dark fantasy setting
I
will also be making a more detailed post explaining how one-time
imports of previous LE characters into the new campaign will work. This
post will also explain new character creation and the new Ruin Points
system, which will serve as a major incentive to continue attending all
other Live Effects games (and non-LE LARPs, too).
I need to make
it clear that we are *not* doing this to be elitist, or because of any
problem with any of the other LE games. Personally, I'm still planning
to participate in every other LE game that I can. This new system is to
try to build a darker, self-contained setting with a storyline that the
players can effect without worrying about the consequences on other
game worlds.
Important Note:
This game world will remain closed even after the six-game series runs.
All new characters, going forward, must be natives to this game world.
If you can't make it to the first Shades of Ruin game, or you decide to
staff for Shades of Ruin, you will still be given one chance to import
into Shades of Ruin later. We will not be accepting outside game credit
for any events outside Shades of Ruin after the first game runs,
however. You will gain Ruin Points for attending other events instead.
Who is the Plot Team:
The Plot team for this campaign has not yet been determined. At this
time, I am still using the same Plot team as Beyond the Veil for the
Epilogue event. After that, we will probably expand the Plot team, and
some members of the Plot team may switch to PCing for the next six
games.
When is Beyond Mythralis running?I am making a separate post with the dates for this campaign for the next year.
What rules are being used?We
are using a new rules document that includes the basic storyline, the
rules, and the bluebook in a single document. These rules use most of
the same mechanics as Live Effects, including all the same core calls,
but a slightly different advancement system. The main difference is
that magic works very differently. A Beta version of these rules will
be posted separately soon.
Where are the new games running? The
sites are still TBA. Mostly, we will probably use the same sites as
before, such as Malibu Creek, Huntington Central Park, and Camp Josepho.
Please feel free to post here if you have any questions, comments, or concerns. Thanks!
This is a test entry to see if things work.
